'Sales' Training

5 second Cold Calling

I'd REALLY like you to try cold calling

Unfortunately Cold Calling has a bad name. That's sad because it's the most cost-effective advertising if done correctly. It's a passion of mine. Just don't do a George selling computers in his dads garage. HOOCHIE MUMA

Your goal is to start a long-term mutually beneficial relationship with local businesses

And yes, it’s scary. I started in 2001. It gets easier very quickly. And yes you will become a superhuman communicator if you do it

What is Cold Calling?

When you're at a friend’s party, you introduce yourself to strangers.

Cold calling is similar - you’re introducing your business to other local businesses

without pressure or expectations

and following-up

Effective Cold Calling is not about

  • calling individuals at home. (That’s dodgy – don’t do it)

  • being pushy, tricky, enthusiastic or anything that signals - salesperson!

3 ways to start Cold Calling. Email, phone or visit

1. Cold Emailing

Do not bulk-cold-email because it sends a I JUST WANT YOUR MONEY message.

Leave bulk-cold-emailing for the get-rich-quick-crew

Only cold email if you personalise it AND follow up with your voice

2. Phone Cold Calling

Ahhh the 'phone days' of 20 years ago. Sigh.

Phone cold calling is harder these days because of all the scammers, but still worth it if you do this...

Only call businesses near you and don't say anything that hints 'salesperson'. Be direct and casual.

"Hi, I'm looking at your website. I'm a freelance XXXX. I've written some articles about XXXX can I share them with you?"

What happens next is out-of-your-control, so get off the phone asap then send a really short email and call in 2 days

Then drop off a hardcopy the next day (keep reading) When you walk in say, Hi, delivery for XXXX can I give it to her personally?"

3. Visit (in-person) Cold Calling

Educate Entertain Inspire

Pick an appropriate business district, close to you. Do this 10-11am mid-week. Deliver a flyer or educational articles. A flyer must have REALLY clear answers to these 7 questions. Who, what, where, when, why, how and how much?

Act like a courier, (so you don't get stressed). Smile, eye contact - "Good morning" – Place it 2 feet from their keyboard - Exit. Don't engage, it's stressful. Get in, get out.

When outside, write the business name, time and description of worker, (female with black hair)

Phone in 2 days “Hi, I dropped off a XXXX 2 days ago, did you have any questions about it?”

Take a friend to stand outside, of each business, for moral support

ADVANCED - Get a friend / actor to dress-up as a character (that reflects your brand). And have them walk in first

Why cold call?

  • Because if they haven't heard of you, they CANNOT buy from you.

  • Because now your follow-up is not spam.

REMEMBER - HOW they respond is IRRELEVANT. I've had plenty brush-me-off and buy later

As a Sales Trainer I can train you in a Cold Calling method that is not Pushy or Tricky

using flyers, phone and email.
